What is RiverRock?
RiverRock is located in Willoughby Hills, OH and, as of 2023, was the only “unbuilt” Frank Lloyd Wright design that still had its original building site available. To understand how important that is, Wright oriented the design around a specific poplar tree. That tree was marked at the time and still stands today.
In 2023 the current owners, the Dykstras, set out to build this last piece of history. The mission was to build with the intent of Mr. Wright; the mandate to the professionals: “If you must change something due to code, products, etc., do so under the ‘skin’, so it looks exactly the same”. With that said, the original plans, with supplemental structural engineering drawings were submitted for permitting and approved in June 2023.
The specification book, which came with the plans, required locally quarried stone. Lou Penfield decided to collect bins and bins of rock from the Chagrin River and name the house "Riverrock'. The rocks, harvested throughout the 60's, were found in the woods by the Dykstras. These same stones were incorporated into the build and the name was slightly modified to emphasize the importance of this find: RiverRock!
The professionals delivered on their mandate and we are now proud to present RiverRock, a beautiful 2025 build from Frank Lloyd Wright 1959 plans.
